To become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (i.e. board certified), the veterinarian must have:
- Finished a two to three year residency in Dermatology, where the veterinarian studied skin disorders of all species, including dogs, cats, horses, farm animals, small exotic animals, zoo animals, birds, reptiles and even human diseases.
- Seen a specified number and variety of cases during his/her residency
- Performed a research project in an area of skin disease that advances the knowledge in the field
- Have published results of the research in a medical or veterinary medical journal
- Pass a rigorous series of examinations in order to prove competency in all areas of veterinary dermatology
